calgary Missions Day #5

Today we had an awesome day.

Group 1 got up and left around a quarter to eight. Jeremy drove them to the Calgary Food Bank where they packaged 700+ food hampers in 2 1/2 hours.  They will be sent out to homeless people around Calgary. They truly impressed their supervisor by finishing their packaging 20 minutes early than expected. So they took a tour and then left early to go to lunch. They went to Giant Hamburger for lunch where they had...HAMBURGERS!!! After they were done eating lunch they traversed to the Salvation Army's Children's Cottage where they ran the VBS program for young kids. Then they came back to the JLYS (Jesus Loves You Society) to make a hot chocolate run. After that they went for supper at a Vietnamese place where they had a grand time learning to use chopsticks. Then after dinner they walked back to the JLYS.

Group 2 worked at the Salvation Army Center of Hope. They worked in the kitchen most of the day grating cheese, making sandwiches and serving food. They also ate both of their meals in that cafeteria. Apparently it was pretty cool. For them it was a pretty uneventful day.

Group 3 stayed at the JLYS all day. At 9 we met Miriam, the head chef for the day, and she and I went for a bread run. What's a bread run you might ask? A bread run is when Miriam takes the big 12 seater van(that only had the 2 front seats in) and goes to Sobeys to pick up their day old pastries, cakes and breads. Then we brought all the bread items back and placed them in the food room. After that we had a truck from the Calgary Food Bank visit us. We received about 40 boxes of food. Then we organized the food items into bags to hand out to the moms who come to the JLYS. Once we finished that task we made lunch, met the ladies who come regularly, and handed out food bags. This was one of the most amazing things all day. To know that you are helping people. Then we cleaned up and started getting ready for supper. While we were getting ready for supper when Miriam waltzed in and asked us to take all the little salt and pepper packets(restaurant sized), rip them open and empty them into salt and pepper shakers. So we did. It took us about an hour to empty these packets into 10 shakers. Then we finished making dinner, served it, ate and cleaned up

All in all it was a pretty sweet day.
Love you all,
Hilary De Roo
