Day #8

Hello, this is mostly Hilary and a bit of Kendra. We are going to fill you guys in on Day #8.

We started off our day in a truly Canadian way by attending Johanna's (Darryl and Julia Reimer's daughter) hockey game. We cheered a lot and got PUMPED up. We were the first ones to start a slow clap and do the wave at those children's hockey game.
After that, we drove into the Upper West side of Manhattan, parked, and took the subway to the Ground Zero Museum Workshop. We watched some videos that occurred around the time of the terrorist attack and explored their gallery using an audio tour set. We saw the famous clock that stopped at 10:02:14am [which is the exact time at which the south tower was hit]. We also saw a Bible page that was found in the ruins; it was Genesis 11, which talked about the tower of Babylon.
Afterwards we walked past the Ground Zero site and saw the new tower they are building -- The Freedom Tower. Then we visited Battery Park and saw the Statue of Liberty. While we were at the park we were approached by several people who were walking around with briefcases that were filled with watches and sunglasses that they were trying to sell for ridiculous prices. We had to use our bartering abilities as not to get cheated. It was so much fun! We also had a contest to see who could get the lowest price on an I love NY t-shirt; the cheapest price was $4.
Then we went for dinner at the world's largest Applebees near Times Square and had some seriously good food. After that, we split into groups and went shopping and exploring for an hour in Times Square. Then we took the subway to our vans and drove back to the house in Tarrytown. Following a long day of walking, we ended the day with a time for sharing and worship. Overall, we had an awesome day and are looking forward to the rest of the days that we get to spend in the Big Apple!
See you when we get home on Monday! =)

Day #7

HELLO EVERYBODY!!!!

Thanks everyone who has been reading this, and praying for us while we are out here. It is very much appreciated!!

This morning was a lazy one, as we got to sleep in until NINE O'CLOCK!!! We were all pretty pumped!!
We all got ready, and headed to the South Asian Community Center for lunch. Most got Gyros, lamb or chicken pitas, and Dip n' Dots (the ice cream of the FUTURE)!!! We left for Masbeth Bible Church for the kids and youth program there. We were there by 1 o'clock and helped the program leader, Dorothy, and her helpers Brigy, Eric and Todd. We all did various activities before the kids got there; bathroom cleaning, put together Easter eggs, organized donated clothes, craft organization, mopped and swept, made picture collages, scraped the gym floor, and addressed envelopes. Once the kids got there, we were all helping with the different activities that they had planned. There were crafts, gym games, spoon hockey, basketball, scooters and lots more.

Then we got some directions and drove to Manhattan to Times Square, and The Gate at The Times Square Church. The Gate is a youth night the church has every Friday night. It was a wonderful evening of worship and speaking. It was about three hours long, but it was very different. There was a play for us, and a sermon by the Pastor. It was a good night. McDonald's for supper and a walk by Times Square for some of us after the service.

We drove back to the Reimer's house and had a little chat. Then we hit the sack. Tomorrow and Sunday are days of being a tourist!! So we are gonna get up pretty early, and hit the city!!

Have a great night everyone!!  Love ya'll

Day #6

Good morning from the largest city in the US of A.  yesterday was a bit of a interesting day; all of the groups carried on with their usual activities of teaching English, hanging out with pastor Botto, (who was very sick but never for a minute did it slow him down) or putting some finishing touches on our construction projects.  After lunch we were treated to a visit at a mosque in Queens.  It was the largest one in the entire city and had an operating school for ages k to 12.  It was really interesting and informative our tour guide stood up to the challenge and put his best foot forward and answered all of our questions.  After the tour we prepared to go to our next activities; the three groups were each teaching english at different locations but we suffered our first vehicle related incident we received a cruel lesson in parking when our van was towed away to some addressless location which occupied Scott and Joy for the rest of the night.  in the end our van stayed in the impound and we received a new one from the rental company.  Scott and Joy said they felt like they were in the amazing race.  everything else went smoothly and more or less as planned.  His grace is sufficient.
